Eihei-ji Temple
永平寺
Eihei-ji, deep in the mountains of Fukui Prefecture, is a head temple of Soto Zen, founded by the master Dogen in the thirteenth century. It remains a strict training monastery where scores of monks follow a rigorous daily discipline, its many halls linked by covered wooden stairways through an ancient cedar forest.
