Shiogama Shrine

鹽竈神社

Shiogama Shrine, the ichinomiya of old Mutsu Province, crowns a hill above the fishing port of Shiogama near Matsushima. Long revered by seafarers and by expectant mothers praying for safe childbirth, it honors the deity who taught people to make salt, and its grounds bloom with the rare Shiogama cherry.
