Kenchō-ji Temple
建長寺
Kencho-ji, founded in 1253, is the oldest Zen training monastery in Japan and ranks first among Kamakura's Five Great Zen Temples. Its grand sanmon gate, ancient juniper trees said to be grown from seeds brought from China, and still-active meditation halls convey the austere spirit of Kamakura Zen.
