Suwa taisha

Suwa Taisha, one of Japan's oldest shrines, comprises four large shrine complexes around Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture. Instead of a main sanctuary, worship focuses on sacred mountains and trees. It is famed for the Onbashira Festival, held every six years, when huge fir trunks are ridden down steep slopes and raised at the shrines.
