Meiji Jingu enshrines Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken in a tranquil forest of some 100,000 donated trees in the heart of Tokyo, beside Harajuku. Its towering wooden torii and gravel approach feel worlds away from the city, and it draws Japan's largest crowds for New Year's first prayers.
