Chichibu Shrine, the venerable heart of the Chichibu basin west of Tokyo, is renowned for its vividly colored Edo-period carvings, including works attributed to the master Hidari Jingoro. It hosts the Chichibu Night Festival in early December, a UNESCO-recognized spectacle of lantern-lit floats and fireworks.
