Ise Jingu in Mie Prefecture is Shinto's most sacred site, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, ancestral deity of the imperial line. The complex of over one hundred shrines centers on the Inner and Outer Shrines, whose main sanctuaries are completely rebuilt every twenty years in an unbroken ancient ritual cycle.
