Hie Shrine stands on a wooded hill in Akasaka, historically revered as the protector of Edo Castle and now of Tokyo itself. Dedicated to the deity of Mount Hiei, it is guarded by monkey statues believed to aid matchmaking and safe childbirth, and hosts the Sanno Matsuri, one of Edo's three great festivals.
