Dazaifu Tenmangū

太宰府天満宮

Dazaifu Tenmangu near Fukuoka is built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, the ninth-century scholar-statesman deified as Tenjin, god of learning. One of the head shrines of Japan's many Tenmangu, it draws students praying for exam success and is famed for thousands of plum trees, including the legendary 'flying plum.'
