Aso Shrine

阿蘇神社

Aso Shrine, the ichinomiya of old Higo Province, stands within the vast Aso caldera in Kumamoto and venerates deities of the volcano and of agriculture. Its towering two-story romon, counted among Japan's three great shrine gates, collapsed in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes and has been painstakingly restored.
