Engaku-ji, second-ranked of Kamakura's Five Great Zen Temples, was founded by regent Hojo Tokimune to console the souls of those who died repelling the Mongol invasions. Its wooded valley complex includes the Shariden reliquary hall, a National Treasure, and a great bell cast in the Kamakura period.
